Privacy Policy

What We Collect

• Account information: your email address, username, and account identifiers.
• Study and progress data you create: subjects, focus dives (when they started and ended, minutes, whether the dive was verified, and whether it was done in the phone app or on the web), streaks, XP, levels, fish and companion progress, appeals you send, and reflections you write. Older versions of the phone app also report how often and how long you were away from a dive; that record is stored and never used to reduce what a dive earns.
• Profile photo (optional): if you add one, it is stored in a public storage folder and shown with your username.
• Voice reflections (optional): when you record an Active Recall reflection, your phone's speech recognition service turns what you say into text. On most Android phones that service is provided by Google and may process the audio on its servers. ProofGrade stores the text, not the recording.
• App checks during a dive (optional Usage Access): if you grant Usage Access, ProofGrade checks on your phone which app was in front while you were away from a dive. The app's name stays on your phone; our server receives only whether a blocked app was used and for how long.
• Study presence: while a dive is running, the app records that you are studying, about once a minute. Only you and ProofGrade's own server functions can read it.
• Friends and messages: your friend code, the friend requests you send and receive, your friends list, and the direct messages you send to and receive from friends, including when they were read. Only you can see your own friend code; you choose who to give it to. Only you and the friend you are talking to can read a conversation, unless one of you reports a message, in which case the ProofGrade team can read that message to review the report. You can send at most 20 friend requests a day.
• Reports you send about another student: who sent the report, who it is about, the reason you chose, anything you typed, and a copy of that student's username and profile photo link as they were when you reported them. Only the ProofGrade team can read reports; the student you reported is not told who reported them.
• Students you block: the accounts you have blocked, so that you and they stop appearing to each other on the leaderboard, on profiles, and in your friends list and messages. You can see and undo this list in Settings.
• App usage events: actions such as opening a screen or starting and finishing a dive, linked to your account, used to understand and improve the app.
• Crash and error reports: technical details such as stack traces and device and operating system information. Crash reports are configured not to include personal data, screenshots, or what was on your screen.
• Advertising data: Google Mobile Ads collects device and advertising identifiers, such as the Android Advertising ID, and ad interaction data to show and measure ads. When you watch a rewarded ad, Google confirms it to our server so the bonus can be added to your account.
• Website and web app: the ProofGrade web app keeps your sign-in session and your progress in your browser's local storage so it works between visits. ProofGrade does not set advertising cookies of its own.
• Website visits: our website and web app count visits with Umami, a privacy-focused analytics service. It uses no cookies and stores no personal data: it records which pages are opened, the referring website, and the browser, device type and country, without identifying you.
• Ads on our website: our website may show ads served by Google AdSense. Google and its partners use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website and to other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies lets it and its partners show you ads based on those visits. You can opt out of personalized advertising in Google's Ads Settings, and learn how Google uses information from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

How We Use Information

• To create and sign in to your account.
• To save your study history, progress, streaks, and preferences.
• To verify focus dives and to detect and prevent cheating.
• To deliver messages between friends, to review reported messages and students, and to keep blocked students out of each other's leaderboard, profiles, and conversations.
• To send reminders and notifications you turn on.
• To find and fix crashes, bugs, and security issues.
• To understand how the app is used so we can improve it.
• To show ads and to add rewarded-ad bonuses that the ad network has confirmed.

Who Processes Information

We do not sell your personal information for money. Google Mobile Ads may use your advertising ID to show personalized ads, which some US state privacy laws treat as "selling" or "sharing" personal information; see Your Choices And Rights for how to opt out. ProofGrade uses these service providers, which process data on our behalf:

• Supabase: sign-in, database, and file storage.
• Sentry: crash and error reporting.
• Google: Google Mobile Ads for advertising in the phone app, Google AdSense for advertising on our website, and, on most Android phones, the speech recognition service used for voice reflections.
• Firebase Hosting (Google): serves this website and the web app.
• Umami: cookieless visit statistics for the website and web app.

Other signed-in students can see your username, profile photo, level, streak, and verified study minutes on the leaderboard and on your public profile. You can take yourself off the leaderboard in Settings; you then hold no place on it and your profile shows no rank.

We may also disclose information when required by law, to enforce our terms, or to investigate fraud, abuse, or security incidents.

Retention And Security

We keep account and study data for as long as your account is active. We use reasonable administrative and technical safeguards, including encryption in transit, but no online system can guarantee absolute security.

When you delete your account, your profile, profile photo, focus dives, progress, and every other record linked to your account are deleted from the live service. App usage events and error reports are kept without any link to you. Limited backup copies may persist for a short period for disaster recovery and security.

Your Choices And Rights

• Usage Access, the microphone, and notifications are optional. You can refuse them, or turn them off later in your phone's settings.
• If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, the app asks for your consent before ads use your personal data. You can change your choice at any time in Settings under "Your privacy choices". On our website, visitors in these regions are asked for consent before ads use their personal data.
• You can clear what the web app stores by signing out and clearing this site's data in your browser.
• If you live in a US state whose privacy law gives you the right, you can opt out of the use of your personal information for targeted advertising (which some of these laws call "selling" or "sharing") in Settings under "Your privacy choices".
• Students who tell the app they are under 16 are not asked for ad consent and are shown only non-personalized ads.
• You can also reset or delete your advertising ID in your device's settings.
• You can change your username, photo, language, theme, and notification settings in the app.
• You can hide yourself from the leaderboard, remove friends, and block students in Settings.
• You can delete your account in the app under Settings, or follow the instructions on the Account Deletion page if you cannot use the app.

Children

ProofGrade is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
